TIMELESS HOME DESIGN: HOW CUSTOM ARCHES TRANSFORM ANY SPACE
arches INSTANTLY TRANSFORM YOUR HOME
They soften lines, add character, and create a timeless connection between rooms. At Simone & Phil, we believe the smallest details make the biggest impact, and arches are one of those details. Over the years, we’ve designed and built custom arches in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, and heritage homes across Hamilton and Toronto. Each style requires its own technique, but all of them add beauty, function, and character to the spaces we renovate.
Here are some of our favourite arches we’ve created for clients through our design-build projects.
semicircle ARCH
The semicircle arch is one of the most classic and versatile styles, perfect for bathrooms, hallways, and accent walls. In one of our attic principal suite renovations, a semicircle arch framed both the shower entrance and the doorway, drawing the eye upward to highlight vaulted ceilings and exposed beams. The curve softened what could have been a sharp, angular room, while adding a timeless architectural detail.
Not every arch needs to be grand to make an impact. Smaller details, like an arched niche by the vanity, can add just as much charm. Built directly into the wall and finished with plaster, this niche became a custom display shelf that blends millwork craftsmanship with functional storage.
segmental ARCH
A segmental arch is a flatter curve, less dramatic than a semicircle but equally impactful. It works especially well in heritage homes, where the goal is to respect original character while introducing new life.
In this century-old Hamilton home, we paired a segmental arch doorway with a matching transom to echo the home’s original millwork. The arch feels grounded and elegant, framing the entry while keeping proportions true to the home’s history.
This is where the Simone & Phil approach shines — we understand the structural demands of old homes and blend them with thoughtful, modern design.
three-centered ARCH
The three-centered arch — sometimes called a Tudor arch — is one of the most intricate styles to build. It combines three arcs to create a softer, elongated curve that feels both stately and inviting.
In this kitchen, we used a three-centered arch to frame the range alcove. It transforms the cooking zone into a focal point, tying in custom cabinetry and tile work. In the bathroom, the same arch style softens the shower entrance, making it feel like a designed feature rather than just a utility space.
These arches are harder to execute, but they showcase the craftsmanship and detail-oriented approach that set our design-build projects apart.
Arches are more than just decorative shapes. They connect rooms, highlight craftsmanship, and create a sense of permanence in a home. From custom kitchens in Toronto to attic suites in Hamilton, every arch we build is tailored to the space and to the story the home tells.
At Simone & Phil, we design and build homes that balance historic character with modern function—and arches are one of the many ways we achieve that.
